Where we are at!

Where are we at?

Tonight as I am tucked up in bed, we are still at Ayers Rock Resort (very posh) not really, it's the only place you are aloud to stay with in cooee of the rock so this is where we are at.

Yesterday we drove in from the nice little free camp dad found for us. I was after morning tea bundled into the front seat and told it was my turn. I've been happy in the back seat, but I took my seat and shut up like the good daughter I am.

Not much to report from the early part of the drive yesterday, it rained! And was still raining by the time we got to the SA/NT boarder so stopping was not going to happen, it would not have been nice getting out of the car so dad slowed down so I could have a look. Not much to report there.

So morning tea was at the next road house... Mum and dad had been saying all the way down and in some parts of SA how cheap the fuel was compared to North Queensland! Yep not today my friend. $2 a litre. Yep I bet a buck 60 is looking pretty good about now, anyway we had to fill up so they had us!

This brings us back to the front seat... Driving along and all of a sudden out of the  horizon pops Mount Connor. WOW!!!! What an amazing thing to see popping out of the flat country. To myself I thought that can't be Ayers Rock! Nope it wasn't. We stopped at the look out for Mount Connor, it was going to be the stop for the night but it was right on the highway and we would have been right in the wind. So we moved onto here. While stopped at the look out dad said 'keep your camera out and follow me!' So across the highway we go and up what I like to call a real desert hill. Real red RED dirt... But on the other side of this hill was Lake Amadeus.... WOW! 1032km square of salt lake, pretty amazing stuff to see.

So after seeing this amazing stuff I am shoved back into the back seat (just kidding) for the rest of the day. Coming along to Ayers Rock popping out of the desert like Connor was not as amazing, but still worth the drive. Anyway we get to the (resort) set up and make plans for Monday. The rock was closed on Sunday due to weather so we decided to get up early and see what the rock was doing and if it was open go for the walk up it, but if it was closed head for The Olgas and plan B.

So onto Monday.

Setting an alarm while on holidays is something one should not have to do. But I set it anyway. (Side note) did you know the sunrise time for Ayers Rock this morning was 7.26am.... So setting alarm for 7am in the pitch black to make a phone call about walking a rock in the freezing cold!!! Yep remember I'm on holidays. Anyway I get up, (roll over and get phone and make call from sleeping bag) "The rock is closed to winds, check back at 8am" oh well we have a plan B so I get up anyway fill mum and dad in on the plans and we have Breslin and put some washing on and head out for the Olgas.

We do the first lookout walk with dad before he heads back to the car while mum and I walk to second lookout. Both amazing sights, can't wait to post some pics for you. We want to do the loop walk but we didn't tell dad of our plans so we head back the was we came. Had morning tea out there and drove back here for lunch.

After lunch dad stayed to guard the washing and make stew and dumplings for dinner (I'm getting pretty spoilt this holiday) mum and I went out and did the base walk around the rock. 10km or a bit more. Funny they graded the walk this morning as (grade 3) which was ok, that base walk which was all and I mean ALL FLAT! Was also graded a 3.... Oh well! It was a great walk.

Mum was very patient with me and stopping all the time to take pictures. Not sure how long we took to walk it, but we did not get a chance to get back to the gorge walk at the Olgas that we missed this morning. Guess that means I will have to come back at some stage.

Tomorrow we are off to Kings Canon. We have looked at the weather and it looks like another rainy day so we are pretty sure the rock will be closed again and I have decided I am not as keen as i thought i was to climb it. Maybe another time.

Anyways looking forward to Kings Canon. Hope to get a bike ride in soon, but need to fix flat tyre on bike first... Can you believe I went 14 days without any flats or any drama with my bike and I've had two flats (while bike had been on bike rack on back of car) since the bike ride finished.

We carry on!
